512 Homestore News: Rumor or Truth, Pier 1 Imports Closing it's Doors?

Rumor or Truth, Pier 1 Imports Closing it's Doors?

Pier 1 Imports Closing it's doors by December 2009?

Pier 1 ImportsSad but true, this rumor has been floating around for a bit now - and many sources say that indeed Pier One is closing many of it's stores by December of 09. However, their are also sources that say it's a rumor.

If this is true, what this means to you though - is SALE SALE SALE!!! Stagers, home owners, decorate it yourselfers? Go stock up now. Find out if any of your local stores are closing and when. Their close date will determine the amount you can save.

Maybe that rug imported from India shouldn't have been priced quite so high. I've often liked the Pier 1 style, but their price tags are a bit on the high side. With this economy these are the types of stores that are in trouble. Stores like Target and even Wal-mart have made a wise choice in replicating the Pottery Barn/Pier One look at a much lower cost to buyers. I think we'll be seeing more stores in the near future not able to keep up with the economic crunch.

And along that line of thought I found a retail traffic site that is following this topic along with what other stores are closing some or all of its doors.

Malita, I heard rumors about this as well. In fact, someone I know said they were already closing stores in Florida. I agree with you about their prices as well, especially in these tough economic times.

I have heard the same rumor.  Going the way of many companies that are really in trouble right now.

Their prices have been too high for about 33 years that I know of. I hope I don't miss any sales, though, if they close their stores.

Well said Malita.  They never have got pricing right.  They have some interesting stuff, but now you can get the same made in China and India home decorations at Wal-Mart, how are they going to compete?  How is it that so many stores still don't get every day low prices?  It is what people want, yet when I go to Kohls and the like it looks like the whole place is a fire sale with everything marked 50% off.  It's really embarrassing, and maybe that is why I only go to places like that rarely, and even more rarely buy anything.

Since posting a quick snippet on Facebook i've had friends from all over the country saying theirs already closed - especially in the NE.

Russel - its funny you say that - the past 33 years. B/c when I was a kid we had a Pier One - it was this really cool barn like place with all these really neat and differnet things from India etc - well I was a kid. And I remember it being "that expensive store" - it never really changed huh?

World Market is the same way - overpriced and you wait for a sale to go on before you even consider buying anything these days. Goods from other countries and once they make it to the floor here they are high - huh?

And you're right Biran - have to slash your prices every week to get buyers says something.
